چکیده

A hstruct -The concept of a super value node is developed to estend the theor? of influence diagrams to allow dynamic programming to be performed within this graphical modeling framework. The operations necessa? to exploit the presence of these nodes and efficiently analyze the models are developed. The key result is that by reprewnting value function separability in the structure of the graph of the influence diagram. formulation is simplified and operations on the model can take advantage of the wparability. Froni the decision analysis perspective. this allows simple exploitation of separabilih in the value function of a decision problem which can significantly reduce memory and computation requirements. Importantly. this allows algorithms to be designed to solve influence diagrams that automatically recognize the opportunih for applying dynamic programming. From the decision processes perspective, influence diagrams with super value nodes allow efficient formulation and solution of nonstandard decision process structures. They a h allow the exploitation of conditional independence between state variables. Examples are provided that demonstrate these advantages.

Dynamic programming in in uence diagrams with decision circuits

Decision circuits perform efficient evaluation of influence diagrams, building on the advances in arithmetic circuits for belief network inference [Darwiche, 2003; Bhattacharjya and Shachter, 2007]. We show how even more compact decision circuits can be constructed for dynamic programming in influence diagrams with separable value functions and conditionally independent subproblems. Once a deci...

Dynamic Influence Diagrams: Applications to Medical Decision Modeling

Influence diagrams are now a well established tool for modeling in decision analysis. Recently, dynamic influence diagrams have been applied to help structure stochastic processes. This chapter discusses dynamic influence diagrams for structuring continuous-time Markov chains, with particular focus on medical decision modeling. We describe our freely available Excel-based software package StoTr...

Solving influence diagrams using heuristic search

Existing methods for solving influence diagrams are mostly based on the bottom-up dynamic programming technique. These methods may waste computation in solving decision scenarios that have zero probabilities or are unreachable from any initial state by following an optimal decision policy. Heuristic search was applied in (Qi & Poole 1995) to address these limitations, but their algorithm uses a...

Information/Relevance Influence Diagrams

In this paper we extend the influence diagram (ID) representation for decisions under uncertainty. In the standard ID, arrows into a decision node are only infonnational; they do not represent constraints on what the decision maker can do. We can represent such constraints only indirectly, using arr ows to the children of the decision and sometimes adding more variables to the influence diagram...

Decision Diagrams and Dynamic Programming

Binary and multivalued decision diagrams are closely related to dynamic programming (DP) but differ in some important ways. This paper makes the relationship more precise by interpreting the DP state transition graph as a weighted decision diagram and incorporating the state-dependent costs of DP into the theory of decision diagrams. It generalizes a well-known uniqueness theorem by showing tha...
